You Don’t Need to Understand AI. You Just Need It to Work.
“We need to educate our team on AI before we implement anything.”
“We’re running an AI literacy program so everyone understands the technology.”
“We’re not ready to implement until leadership understands how it works.”
I hear this constantly.
It’s backwards.
The Understanding Trap
Here’s the logic:
- AI is complex
- We should understand complex things before using them
- Therefore, we need AI education before AI implementation
Sounds reasonable.
It’s wrong.
Corrected logic:
- AI solves business problems
- We should solve business problems when solutions are available
- Understanding the technology is optional if the solution works
Do You Understand Your Car?
Real question:
Do you understand how your car’s engine works?
Can you explain:
- Combustion timing?
- Fuel injection systems?
- Transmission mechanics?
- Computer engine management?
No?
But you drive it every day.
Because you don’t need to understand the engine. You need to know:
- How to drive it
- Where you’re going
- That it gets you there
Same with AI automation.

- How the system processes information
- Technical implementation details
The Car Analogy (Extended)
When you bought your car, did the dealer make you:
- Take a course on internal combustion engines?

- Learn transmission mechanics?
No. They showed you:

- How to drive it
- How to know when something’s wrong

AI automation is the same.
You need to know:
- How to use it
- What results it delivers
- How to tell if it’s working
- Who to call if it’s not
Understanding the internals? Optional.
When Understanding Matters
I’m not saying understanding is never valuable.
Understanding matters when:
- You’re building the AI system yourself
- You’re responsible for maintaining it
- You’re making strategic decisions about AI investment
- You’re in a regulated industry requiring explainability
Understanding doesn’t matter when:
- You’re using an AI tool built by someone else
- You’re measuring outcomes, not algorithms
- You care about results, not methodology
- Your goal is business value, not technical knowledge
Most firms are in the second category.
The Trust Question
“But how can you trust it if you don’t understand it?”
Fair question.
How do you trust your car if you don’t understand the engine?
You measure outcomes:
- Does it start reliably?
- Does it get you where you’re going?
- Does it break down often?
- Are there warning signs when something’s wrong?
Same with AI automation:
- Does it produce accurate results?
- Does it deliver the intended outcomes?
- Does it fail often?
- Can you detect when it’s not working correctly?
You build trust through measured performance, not through understanding internals.
The Construction Firm Example
100-person construction firm implemented automated project reporting.
Before automation:
- 6 project coordinators spent 4 hours each per week compiling project status reports
- Total: 24 hours/week
- Reports went to project managers every Friday

Instead of trying to understand HOW the system works, measure WHETHER it works:

- Is the data complete?
- Are there any obvious errors?
Weekly audits:
- Spot-check 10-20% of data points against source systems
- Track accuracy rate
- Note any discrepancies
Monthly reviews:
- Calculate time savings
- Measure error reduction
- Track business impact
- Assess user satisfaction
Quarterly analysis:
- ROI calculation
- Compare to manual process baseline
- Identify optimization opportunities
- Validate continued value
This gives you confidence the system works without requiring you to understand how it works.
The Bottom Line
Your team doesn’t need AI literacy training.
They need working systems that solve real problems.
Educate on outcomes: “This system generates accurate reports automatically that used to take 25 hours/week.”
Not on internals: “This system uses machine learning algorithms to process data through ETL pipelines…”
One operations director put it perfectly:
