Beverage Tip

Can a person freely switch drinks without fear of getting a hangover? Contrary to popular notion, people do not get a hangover simply because they switch from a vodka cranberry, to a scotch and soda, to a glass of wine. The cause of tomorrow's throbbing headache is primarily due to one or more of the following ten factors:

.The quantity of alcohol imbibed. Of all ten causes, this is usually the chief culprit. Other considerations being equal, larger people have a greater drinking capacity.

.The type of alcohol being consumed. Congeners are by-products formed during the distilling and aging process. These impurities give various a distinct flavor, but they also help produce headaches. Drinks like scotch and brandy have many congeners, whereas vodka has relatively few. Among wines, Chianti has far more than average.

.The quality of alcohol drunk. Premium brands are better-filtered and better-processed, and thus have fewer congeners than the old "thunderbolt" brands.

.The rate at which you pour it down the hatch. The body of an average drinker can comfortably absorb approximately one drink per hour.

.The ingredients of the drink. Lots of syrupy additions will make a stomach revolt, with or without the aid of alcohol.

.One's level of tolerance to alcohol in general, and to the type of drink in particular. Steady drinkers have an advantage in this category over the lighter drinkers.

.The quantity of food in your stomach. The saying "never drink on an empty stomach" is definitely true.

.The quality of food in your stomach. Many people gorge themselves with hors d' oeuvres or indulge in other foods, only to blame the next mornings results solely on alcohol.

.Hygiene. Some busy bartenders or party hosts recycle glassware with only a quick rinse. This does little to wash away pathogenic bacteria.

.Self-fulfilling prophecy. If a person thinks a hangover will result, chances are it will
