Outlook Send/Receive operation results in "Error: SMTP server timed out"

This is often due to your current ISP blocking access to outside e-mail (SMTP) servers.  If this is the case, your ISP wants you to use their SMTP server to send all your mail.

For instance, if you are using Cablevision's Optimum Online service, your SMTP server must be mail.optonline.net.  For Verizon DSL customers this is can be mail.verizon.net.

Check with your Internet Service Provider for exact SMTP server settings.  These usually appear in the support sections of their sites.

The steps to change your Outlook SMTP server to one provided by Optimum Online are as follows:

1. Navigate to Control Panel.  Click "Mail".
2. Click "E-mail Accounts..."
3. Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts" and click "Next"
4. From the listing of E-mail accounts, click on your Brainlink account and click "Change..."
5. For outgoing SMTP server enter "mail.optonline.net"
6. You can click "Next" and then "Finish" to save the new settings.

If you use a mail client other than Microsoft Outlook this procedure will be different.  Check the mail client documentation for more details.
folders.  You can delete messages using the web interface.
